Interesting: This is the second site on google’s search results for the three words.
Also interesting: What will happen if someone checks my search history here at work.
It’s probably just one of those thought-context differences. Like, when I realized what the previous game’s theme was, it was because I stopped thinking about the words one way and started thinking about them another way.
Matthew, email me about the survivor challenge whenever you feel is appropriate. I’m out for the weekend. I’ll be thinking about In and Out the entire time, though.
I’m curious about whether this is a “words from X” (like last time) or a “word describing X” or some other sort of category. I think that would help a lot. Or maybe not at all, because there isn’t really a theme.
Time away did it for me, too. Woke up, took a look, spotted it (in one place first, obviously, based on my initial guess this morning). Soon enough, finished the job.
I’d been looking in the right way for a while last night, at least.
I’ve got one. After I cracked this last night, I took my own and started writing out 50-100 words just to make sure that there were enough (and also to find some of the more fun ones). I’ll need to pick a night where I can be around as well.
I picked Institute because you said Institution was close. I picked Pond because I was working on the theory that every word ending in “nd” was in. I don’t even remember why I picked Meme.
So if somebody were to explain the theme to me, would I say “Oh, that makes sense” or is there a chance I would say “I have no fucking idea what that is”, cause right now, these all just seem like random words to me.
I haven’t figured this out at all. I haven’t spent much time looking at it, but I’m not coming up with any theme at all. I’m pretty sure this is one I’m not going to get. Unless… is there some particular threesome that would be helpful?
There are a few posts I made of ONLY theme-positive words. Bunches of them. You may want to focus on the posts people made just before they “got it.” In those cases, they were onto something and testing possible theories. Looking those over might inspire some paths to explore for yourself. And don’t forget my response to your “words from X” question.
It wasn’t any one word for me…it was the fact that the list was so damned random-looking, I had to make a doc with every acceptable word and stare at it. I’d noticed patterns the day before, but it wasn’t until yesterday morning that I saw what the patterns meant.
When I started to get it, I would just look at the list and say “these words look like they go together and these words look like they go together”. But then I looked at flaky and said “WTF does that word go with?”
Like i said above, it was “paleobotany” and “walkabout”.
I also could have come up with two more like “mine”, but I wasn’t sure how the longer words fit in, and it felt unfair to get in when I didn’t know whyat the pattern was.
Also, the fact that the alternate spelling “mollusc” was chosen was a key clue to me.
I wouldn’t think about that too hard. I’m not even sure I’d frame it that way…I think I’d say something like “Words with,” though it certainly can be done that way. In any event, it takes more than a few words to explain. Don’t spend much time thinking about that. The only thing I can say is: look at the entire list in every way you can think to do so.
I don’t want to say all the theories I’ve eliminated, since some of them would make good categories in the future, but I’ve considered a metric ton of ideas. This is paintful. I don’t think any amount of more words will make me see what is there.
I think your best bet is to make the three words very similar and discover if some work while some don’t. D’ghost did that earlier, and it looked like a smart approach to me.
I think whenever you post a new one you should post the answer to the last one. It feels kind of dickish to hold out on people if they can’t figure it out.
I just imagined a much more difficult variation on this theme that would make me numb. Absent a change in rules, not even the Peyton Manning of “In &
Out” would stand a chance.
I know when I’ve been beat. I knew it several days ago, I just didn’t have the good sense to stop trying. This is pretty much how I predicted this game would go for me. I had nightmares about it last night. But it was pretty much a wash, since I also had a dream where Kelly had this jar of peanut butter…
With the number and depth of things I’ve considered (I mean, the phrases “parallel and intersecting lines” has entered my consciousness because of this one), I’m pretty sure I’ll not be smacking my forehead.
April 20, 2012 at 4:04 pm
Achievement unlocked: Put my [redacted] in a jar of peanut butter.
April 20, 2012 at 4:06 pm
Funny, I don’t remember writing that.
April 20, 2012 at 4:08 pm
Why would it redact the word [redacted]?
April 20, 2012 at 4:09 pm
Hmm… Starts with a “pen”…

Ends with a “cil.”

Funny, I’d think it’d be more likely to make your [redacted] taste like peanut butter.

I was born in NYC, grew up in Connecticut, and moved here in ’94. So no.
And Werewolf is interesting, but I tend to prefer my psychological games when done in person. I’ll keep an open mind, though.
April 20, 2012 at 4:33 pm

Time away did it for me, too. Woke up, took a look, spotted it (in one place first, obviously, based on my initial guess this morning). Soon enough, finished the job.
I’d been looking in the right way for a while last night, at least.
April 21, 2012 at 9:57 am
When it hits you it’s cool. I saw it differently than you first obviously.
April 21, 2012 at 9:42 am
Awesome theme, Gilman.

I concur with the spoonman.
April 21, 2012 at 9:48 am
I heartily disagree.
April 21, 2012 at 9:53 am
Because I don’t know what it is, not because the theme sucks.

I just know enough to stay away from the peanut butter.
April 21, 2012 at 10:17 am
Yep, peanut butter’s got nothin’ to offer here.
Walnut, though…you could put a walnut on it.

Here, let me do it for you- no, no, no. See, I’m good at this part!
April 21, 2012 at 10:26 am
And I’m good at the part where I revel in your frustration.
April 21, 2012 at 12:47 pm
I would like to do the next one of these, by the way, but it’s another day shift here so I’ll only do that if I can start at around 5 Pacific.
Anyway, only three people have gotten this one, I think, so I’ve got ample time to think of a better theme than the one I’ve got.
April 21, 2012 at 1:23 pm
Knock yourself out, whenever the time presents itself. I’m ready to go back to being not-in-the-know.
April 21, 2012 at 2:44 pm
I’ve got one. After I cracked this last night, I took my own and started writing out 50-100 words just to make sure that there were enough (and also to find some of the more fun ones). I’ll need to pick a night where I can be around as well.

April 21, 2012 at 3:11 pm

I haven’t figured this out at all. I haven’t spent much time looking at it, but I’m not coming up with any theme at all. I’m pretty sure this is one I’m not going to get. Unless… is there some particular threesome that would be helpful?
April 21, 2012 at 10:46 pm
There are a few posts I made of ONLY theme-positive words. Bunches of them. You may want to focus on the posts people made just before they “got it.” In those cases, they were onto something and testing possible theories. Looking those over might inspire some paths to explore for yourself. And don’t forget my response to your “words from X” question.
April 22, 2012 at 8:36 am
Yeah, look at this post:
http://spookymilk.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/in-and-out-2/#comment-30171
The one that did it for me was “flaky” because that word just doesn’t seem to fit at all with the other words on that list.
April 22, 2012 at 10:32 am
Just THAT word didn’t seem to fit with the rest?
April 22, 2012 at 11:51 am
Especially that word. Looking closely at that word got me to the solution. Coin was another really weird one for me.
April 22, 2012 at 12:11 pm
It wasn’t any one word for me…it was the fact that the list was so damned random-looking, I had to make a doc with every acceptable word and stare at it. I’d noticed patterns the day before, but it wasn’t until yesterday morning that I saw what the patterns meant.
April 22, 2012 at 1:02 pm
When I started to get it, I would just look at the list and say “these words look like they go together and these words look like they go together”. But then I looked at flaky and said “WTF does that word go with?”
April 22, 2012 at 3:06 pm
Like i said above, it was “paleobotany” and “walkabout”.
I also could have come up with two more like “mine”, but I wasn’t sure how the longer words fit in, and it felt unfair to get in when I didn’t know whyat the pattern was.
Also, the fact that the alternate spelling “mollusc” was chosen was a key clue to me.
April 22, 2012 at 12:40 pm
I know. This is exactly what I’ve been doing, keeping in mind the “words that are X”.
Every theory that pops into my head (and admittedly, it’s been few) has been one that doesn’t actually work.
April 22, 2012 at 12:47 pm
I wouldn’t think about that too hard. I’m not even sure I’d frame it that way…I think I’d say something like “Words with,” though it certainly can be done that way. In any event, it takes more than a few words to explain. Don’t spend much time thinking about that. The only thing I can say is: look at the entire list in every way you can think to do so.
April 22, 2012 at 6:16 pm
I officially give up. I’ve thought up about a dozen good ideas for future challenges though.
Gilman, I’d congratulate you on stumping me, but I’m an idiot, and especially so at these types of things.
April 22, 2012 at 8:55 pm
I’ll take what I can get.
April 22, 2012 at 9:51 pm
So Novak, would you say you concede?
April 22, 2012 at 10:27 pm
I just can’t find something that fits all the words. And I get that there have been all sorts of hints, but I’m not getting any closer… thanks though.
April 22, 2012 at 10:32 pm
Is there some sort of conditional rule? That’s where I’ve been thinking for a while, with no success.
April 22, 2012 at 10:39 pm
Just the condition that the words fit the theme.

Settle down, didn’t mean anything by it.
April 22, 2012 at 10:55 pm
This one is extremely frustrating, since there’s something about the words themselves, which means it’s staring us in the face.
April 22, 2012 at 10:57 pm
You two are really close. Even the ones that are wrong are almost right.
April 22, 2012 at 10:58 pm
That’s just a function of mimicking. Even if I’ve got all 3 right they wouldn’t be because I know it.
April 22, 2012 at 10:52 pm

April 22, 2012 at 10:59 pm
The long list of words Matthew posted were the most helpful. It was more of a visual thing.
April 22, 2012 at 11:00 pm
I’ve considered a number of visual things… I’ll give it another shot.
April 22, 2012 at 11:00 pm
This one’s been going on a long time, and if you really do want to give up, it might be fine if I emailed you the answer.
In any event, I’ll probably put one up tomorrow morning or late tonight, so there’s no real reason to string it out forever.

April 23, 2012 at 10:52 am
I’m just waiting to hear what the theme is so I know if I should smack myself in the forehead or just shrug and admit I would have never gotten it.
April 23, 2012 at 10:57 am
I don’t think this one is forehead smacking worthy.
April 23, 2012 at 11:00 am
With the number and depth of things I’ve considered (I mean, the phrases “parallel and intersecting lines” has entered my consciousness because of this one), I’m pretty sure I’ll not be smacking my forehead.
April 23, 2012 at 9:11 pm
I’d say it’s somewhere in the middle of those two. You shouldn’t feel bad for not getting it, but it’s not something that you might never figure out.
April 23, 2012 at 11:19 am
I had a dream where Kelly and the Milkmaid were getting divorced, and she was taking him to the cleaners. It was really sad.
