In and Out 5

Because there is never enough to do around here.
February
Roman

AND
Mayan
January

Directions for thoes who haven’t played yet:
The game starts out with one person who picks a theme of some sort and is the only person who is “in”. He then lists three things that are part of that theme to get people started. Next, people start listing three things and anybody who is “in” will respond with yes or no to each of them. Once somebody nails puts down three things that are all “yes”, the people who are “in” will usually decide to declare him in (unless for some reason they are not sure that person has guessed the theme, but normally you just declare them in).
A sample game might go like this:
I post
red
blue
green
to start off the game. So Spooky guesses
orange
poop
dinosaur
to which I respond “Yes, no, no”. At this point, Spooky figures out that the theme is colors and guesses
magenta
cyan
black
To which I say “Yes, yes, yes. You are in.” Then Spooky can start answering yes or no to anybody’s questions. The game goes on until people decide to stop.

You’re going to get real tired of me submitting 6 triplets every time.
-
adobery on May 8, 2012 at 10:45 am
Then I’ll save myself some grief and say the order you submit them in makes no difference. That would be even more cruel and how would you determine it was correct if a person guessed one word right?
-
mbnovak on May 8, 2012 at 10:48 am
So if the order didn’t matter, why did previously correct words end up incorrect? Obviously the words need to be related to each other somehow… but we’ve seen individual words be correct without the others being correct… quite odd.

Yeah, I’m really struggling with this. Words obviously are conditioned on other words in the set, otherwise those words would have been in. But they can’t be conditioned on other words in the set because then it doesn’t make sense for single words to be in… unless a single word can satisfy all the conditions required of the set, in which case it wouldn’t matter what other words were used, all of them should be in.

Words conditioned on previous words in the set? That’s not really “in and out.” It’s fun. But it’s a different game.

Good work! You’re in! As long as you answer other people correctly.

The words are somehow contingent on the other words in the set, yes?

-
mbnovak on May 8, 2012 at 11:17 am
So how can it be that “January” was both in and out and “Mayan” was in but “mayan” was out.
I’d think maybe capitalization mattered, but clearly it doesn’t from the January example.

No, I’m sure they weren’t goofs. Because this didn’t work:

At which point we have a set that is both entirely in and entirely out. Which means adobery should probably be mod killed.

Word can be both in and out… it doesn’t depend on capitalization. It doesn’t depend on order/placement in the list. It doesn’t depend on the other words in the set.
Right now I’ve got no other guesses as to what it could depend on. But everything I wrote above is correct, yes?

Every time you post a new threesome I’m terrified that you’ll get in, and I’ll be out here all alone.
-
daneekasghost on May 8, 2012 at 11:30 am
don’t be worried. I have twice typed out a comment about being a sore loser and just going home.
-
mbnovak on May 8, 2012 at 11:31 am
We all know it’s an empty threat. Because we’ve all typed it out ourselves.

Stop it! I’m so hard wired into looking at conditional things now that I don’t think I’ll ever pick up on this one.

possibility, but i’m thinking it’s far more related to my complete ineptitude at this game. i have no effing clue, after running through a million scenarios.

No on these.
Just one rule, but it wouldn’t…be worded…the same…for…Ugh, this is hard…

-
mbnovak on May 10, 2012 at 12:03 am
Yeah… I’m seeing some patterns and such (obviously), but nothing that I can extrapolate out. And I’m still stuck on contingent words, such that one word is in/out based on the other words that are in the set, but I can’t get anything to work. So I’m just going to go back to not trying on this one.

(I’ve got notes somewhere…)Spooky, if I send you three, can you post early next week?
-
spookymilk on May 10, 2012 at 1:48 am
I’m fairly sure I’ve got it saved as a draft here. Hopefully you remember the theme.
Yeah, let’s be careful about when we post it. This place is friggin’ hoppin’ these days. So many games going on. Survivor should be in a writing period at that point and I’m not sure yet about Diplomacy. The Puzzle Challenge stuff goes up on Sundays and Tuesdays, so Monday’s probably best.

yes. you can see that now. wrong form. and wrong equation. (ooh, i’m so delightfully vague.)
